Buoyant Historics sale headed by pre-war Bentley restoration at £168,000, with a 70%+ rate of sale of 187 entries
Deck chairs, ice cream, fine weather, a lush lakeside setting and 187 enormously varied entries awaited visitors to Historics' summer sale at Windsorview Lakes, Berkshire, on Saturday 20th July.
By the close of proceedings, the Buckinghamshire-based auctioneer had recorded another robust sale result at £3million+ and a feisty 71% rate of sale.
Creating enormous interest pre-sale was a restoration project par excellence...The decrepit 1926 Bentley 3-litre Speed Sports Tourer by Vanden Plas was in stark contrast to other wonderfully presented entries surrounding it in the enormous sale room.
That interest continued as the car came to sale, significant bidding interest closing on two would-be owners battling it out as the bidding price soared way about the car's pre-sale estimate of £75,000-£95,000. This hugely collectible pre-war Bentley settled on £168,168, rewarding its new enthusiast owner with a glorious restoration ahead.
A charming 1937 Bentley 4¼ Shooting Brake 'Woody' also joined the boisterous pre-war party. Offered at no reserve it toured gracefully to £68,640.
The Bentley marque was significant in another way too, as 14 of 17 examples brought to sale passed to new owners with an average sale price in excess of £40,000. It was the same buoyant 80%+ sale result for the 18 Mercedes-Benz classics on offer, together demonstrating that demand for these ultra-premium marques remains strong.
An immaculate, wonderfully restored 1983 Porsche 911/930 Turbo 'Special Wishes' model - featuring the highest specification available at the time - created a further heated bidding tussle in hall and with a phone bidder in Australia. His perseverance was rewarding in ownership of this flawless Platinum metallic example at £125,840.
A very varied offering from the Ford camp included a favourite Blue Oval modern classic in the shape of a very original 1986 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth (£41,184)
whilst 'Bullet' film fans were seduced by a 310bhp 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback presented in the spirit of Steve McQueen's film car (£48,048).
A recently restored 1959 Chevrolet Apache featuring a £12,000 respray claimed the honours for street eye candy, the iconic American classic truck rumbling to beyond £41,000.
It was a spritely day for the Lotus marque with surely the auction's most unusual entry - an original clay prototype of the 1986 Lotus Elan M100 (£3,432) setting the scene
before a brace of the later 60s/70s Lotus Elan passed across the auction block. A 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint DHC settled at £28,600 whilst a 1967 Lotus Elan S3 SE, beautifully prepared in fast road guise, sold for £34,320.
Staying with British sporting icons, a 1961 Austin Healey 3000 MK. II, fully restored and with copious paperwork, cruised well ahead of its estimate, to £48,048.
Similarly, it took top money to buy a suave and pampered 1962 Alvis TD21 Series II Drophead Coupé; which finally settled at £50,000.
