The Corvette Grand Sport name is iconic and describes the top-of-the-hill Corvettes throughout the production history of Americaâs premier sports car. The Grand Sport name was first introduced in 1963 when Zora Arkus-Duntov set out to build the ultimate road racing car by transforming the new second generation Corvette (C2). Initially, the project was code-named âLightweightâ by Corvette engineering staff and appropriately so. While these hand-built cars closely resembled the production Stingray, that is where the similarity ended. These race-specific cars were dimensionally smaller than the production Corvettes and featured thinner body panels along with an all-aluminum space frame and a long list of aluminum components that trimmed the weight of these cars to nearly 1900 pounds. Coupled with a specially built 377cid Chevrolet small block V8 that turned out 550hp, these coupes were set to dominate the road racing circuits. Duntov and his team had planned to build 125 of these cars but after only 5 cars were completed, GM brass ordered a halt to the project that Chevrolet Marketing had dubbed the âGrand Sportâ. In an effort to cut production costs, GM executives cited the corporate-wide ban on racing as their reasoning for canceling the program and ordered the 5 completed cars to be crushed. Duntov quickly sourced the cars to private racing programs before they could be destroyed. These very special Corvettes proved to be highly successful race cars in the capable hands of renowned drivers such as Dick Thompson, A.J. Foyt, and Roger Penske. Today all 5 of these cars still exist in private collections and are worth millions as collectibles. Enthusiasts who are a little short on the funds to own an original Duntov Grand Sport can purchase recreations produced by specialty builders such as Mongoose, Superformance and D&D Corvette. Featured here for sale is a 1967 Corvette Coupe featuring a D&D Corvette body and much like the original Duntov Grand Sport Corvettes, this 11-year project was built from the ground up and is highly detailed. We believe the D&D design to be superior to others. The D&D Corvette's body accurately duplicates the original Grand Sport and has been professionally painted a brilliant blue lacquer paint with a pure white racing stripes that were painted on as well, no vinyl stripes here! The paint was applied over well-executed bodywork and was finished with a multi-layer clear coat and expertly polished to a deep luster. Featuring wide body fenders, fitted fender flares, functioning body scoops, and the aerodynamic clear headlight covers, this Corvette presents as a very authentic Grand Sport Recreation. New tinted glass with Roper date codes was installed and the rear window is custom for this body and made of laminated glass. The finishing touch is a one-off machined aluminum gas filler with custom Grand Sport engraving. Inside the cockpit of this road rocket is a mix of race-inspired custom touches. The gray interior features a custom leather door and interior panels with leather-bound carpet. The steel seats are covered with custom leather and built-in bolsters to keep you fitted in your seat. A set of Simpson Racing 4-point seat belts are integrated into the roll cage to keep the occupants secure in their spaces. If it has not been covered in leather, then it was powder coated in Mercedes silver for surface durability. A factory wood-rimmed steering wheel frames the dash that is full-on "race car" inspired and filled with Auto Meter gauges to monitor the engine vitals and a Ron Francis wire panel was used to wire the entire electrical system of this car. A custom shifter pattern hints at the fact there is an extra gear in the gearbox that is shifted by an era-correct chrome shifter. Other features include discrete switches for the power windows and the air conditioning duct work and components are hidden. A 10-Disc CD player with 4 Channel Denon amplifier (hidden in the trunk) and Kicker speakers mounted in the rear of the interior behind custom-fabricated grilles fill the cab with your favorite road tunes. Also note that the roll bar is removable. Under the hood is highly detailed and show-ready with many unique details. Power comes from a 350cid Chevrolet small block V8 topped with a Tuned Port Injection system & aluminum heads producing 9.5:1 compression. A hydraulic roller camshaft operates the valves and a set of custom-built stainless steel headers flow into era-correct side pipes. This hot setup is kept cool with an aluminum radiator and electric fans. Throughout the engine compartment, there are many CNC-fabricated aluminum components including the alternator, brake, radiator, and Vintage A/C compressor brackets as well as a custom cold air intake. As alluded to earlier the power is transferred through a manual 5-speed Richmond gearbox. Underneath the Grand Sport body sits on a 4â full tubular frame that has been powder-coated. The front suspension features CNC-fabricated aluminum components with coil-over suspension featuring power assisted rack and pinion steering. In the rear, a modern Corvette fully independent rear differential keeps the rear tires planted featuring coil-over shock suspension. Power four-wheel disc brakes featuring ABS and stainless-steel brake lines with aircraft fittings bring this beast to a halt with little effort. A custom stainless steel fuel tank in place containing an internal electric fuel pump. The power hits the road through a set of Aluminum Halibrand reproduction wheels with authentic knock-off spinners wrapped in Mickey Thompsom Sportsman racing tires cleverly disguised as vintage Goodyear Racing tires with embossed white lettering. If you could afford to purchase one of the 5 original 1962 Chevrolet Corvette hand-built Grand Sports, it is doubtful you would drive it! Here is an opportunity to own a great recreation of this legendary race car at a reasonable price, considering the level of quality finish. This car is turn-key and show-ready and sure to attract a crowd as you cruise into your local cars and coffee. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions. Thank you for looking.
