When Ferrari introduced the 360 Modena in the late 1990s, it created quite a stir. It broke from many styling traditions and forged a new trail for future Ferraris to follow. The hidden, pop-up headlights were gone, replaced by headlights under clear lenses. The sharper, creased edges leading to subtle curves were largely ousted by mostly subtle curves with a few creases. Flat surfaces were nearly nil. Internally, a new frame was made of Alcoa Aluminum and provided decreased weight and increased stiffness. In fact, the 360 Modena weighed just a gnat’s hair over 3,000 pounds.
The new 3.6L DOHC aluminum V-8 engine revved with blinding eagerness and spun to over 8,000 RPM quickly, thrusting the Ferrari from 0-60 MPH in just a touch over 4 seconds with a top speed nearing 200 MPH. It was a spectacular way to succeed the outgoing F355. Just a few months after the Modena was introduced, the 360 Spider joined the family with an open-top glory that seems too fitting for a Ferrari. Spiders outsold Modenas by a small margin throughout production history, which ceased in 2005. This 2003 360 Spider is finished in “Rosso Corsa,” an exciting way to describe any paint job. The look is furthered with the Scuderia fender badges and a Rosso color-coded tail light panel and Rosso color-coded brake calipers behind factory, silver-painted, 18-inch, alloy wheels with low-profile Continental tires. The aluminum coachwork styled by Pininfarina was a major departure from earlier designs, eschewing the classic egg-crate front grille for two small radiator inlets, though it featured rear haunch scoops that recalled the 250 LM and Dino models.
The 3.6L DOHC 40V all-aluminum V-8 engine is paired with the optional 6-speed F1 paddle-shifted transmission; 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with cross-drilled and slotted rotors and Rosso color-colored brake calipers scrub off speed with exceeding efficiency. The bucket seats are reminiscent of the Daytona pattern, and the interior is upholstered with Cuoio Naturale leather, further featuring a black-topped dashboard and steering wheel, as well as a silver center console.
As easy on the eye as it is thrilling to drive, this open, mid-engine, naturally aspirated Ferrari embodies key technological milestones in Ferrari’s fascinating evolution and so will forever be a spectacular addition to any collection.
