Incredible original example
With styling inspired by the cigar-shaped 1960 Ford Thunderbird, the Ford Corsair made its debut at the 1963 London Motor Show and was pitched as a more luxurious and avant-garde alternative to a Cortina. It was a clever design, using much of the structure, glass and running gear of the Cortina GT to keep costs down, but with the striking and streamlined bodywork giving it a prominent look of its own and the feel of a much bigger car.
This 1964 built example was purchased new through Charles Follett Ltd in Berkeley Street, London. Our vendors father, the first owner, was in the motor business all his life having started with Caffyns in Brighton in 1921 as an apprentice. In the 1930s he had his own business and prepared cars for racing at Brooklands, by 1940 motor racing died due to the War and he ran a factory making parts for tanks during the next five years. He died in the early 70's and the car was passed to his wife who in the late 80's then passed it to her son/our vendor. We are informed it has always been a âthirdâ car and in recent years it has hardly moved, being kept in a garage, indeed it has always been garaged, taxed and insured but maintained correctly. The current mileage is under 45,000 and the car is still in its original colour of Ermine White, we are told benefitting from a respray about twenty years ago. The upholstery is a dark red and it is fitted with bucket seats and has a floor mounted gear stick. Upon inspection what is a fabulously original and solid example surprised our specialist starting impeccably with a little choke and then running as if it was manufactured in 2024! 'Like a sewing machine, a real delight'.
Sadly, in his 87th year our vendor feels the steering is too heavy for him to drive now, hence it does not get used very much, this however is what can be described as a cherished family car that has bought much joy to him over the years and is a fantastic survivor example of the rarely seen Corsair.
