This 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible is a triple black muscle car convertible with great options and desirable documentation! Many would consider 1964 as the kick-off year for an entirely new category in the car market; that being, the muscle car. The first so-called muscle car came into being as an option package by Oldsmobile's GM sister brand, Pontiac, when it released the performance-oriented GTO package on its mid-size car and placed the large Pontiac 389 cubic inch V8 into it. Although Pontiac kicked-off the muscle car race, Oldsmobile was not far behind when, in mid-1964, it debuted its own performance-oriented package, the "4-4-2." The â442â package was essentially a repackaged version of its lesser-known "Police Pursuit" package, and consisted of (and stood for) a 4 barrel carburetor, 4 on the floor 4 speed manual transmission, and 2 (dual) exhausts, along with a beefy V8 and heavier duty suspension and cooling components. As the years progressed through the late-60s into 1970, the Oldsmobile 442 had underwent several major body style changes as did the initial â4 barrel, 4 speed, 2 exhaustâ nomenclature with the introduction of automatic transmissions. The 442 was also no-longer merely an option package but had been spun off into its own distinct model line during the muscle car era. Perhaps most noteworthy about the 1970 Olds 442s is the fact that they are considered by some as Oldsmobileâs last true muscle cars since their 455 cubic inch Olds V8s were not hampered by the pollution control regulations that detracted from the carsâ performance from 1971 and beyond. In addition to the massive Olds big block engine, the â70 442 also came outfitted with other performance-oriented features such as heavier duty suspensions and impressive exhaust systems, along with special 442 appearance items such as unique interiors and identifiable exterior trim. All of the 1970 4-4-2 were 2 doors that came in three body styles, the common Holiday Hardtop, the rare Sports Coupe, and the most luxurious and most expensive Convertible. In total, Oldsmobile produced less than 3,000 1970 442 Convertible which makes this particular example a very rare and desirable automobile. Additionally, this particular 442 Convertible is a well-documented example, coming to us with its protect-o-plate and build sheets. Powering this '70 Olds 442 is a 455 Cubic Inch V8 engine fed by an upgraded Edelbrock single 4 barrel carburetor mounted atop an Offenhauser intake manifold. The 455 V8 is backed by a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission that ensures that just about anybody can take this muscle car for a spin around the block. Exhaust exits the Olds big block via a dual exhaust setup that generates a terrific throaty sound out the rear trumpet-style tailpipes. Being that Oldsmobiles were considered more deluxe cars, they generally came (like this one) with many fantastic options! With power steering, maneuvering in and out of a tight parking space at the local ice cream parlor or car show is almost effortless. Power front disc brakes and power drums in the rear help ensure that you'll be able to bring this 442 to a complete stop much easier. The black vinyl power convertible top is in wonderful condition and it goes up and down with the simple flick of a switch. Riding on a set raised letter BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires mounted on Super Stock II rims, this 1970 Olds 442 has an imposing muscle car look and fantastic ride cruising down the road. The body of this 442 Convertible has been correctly refinished in beautiful Ebony Black paint, accented with white decals on the W25 hood's scoops, completing the exterior look of the car. The interior of this 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible screams luxury! The front Strato-Bucket seats and rear bench have been reupholstered in black vinyl. The center console, matching door panels, black carpeting, padded dash with burl grain inserts, and special Custom-Sport 4-spoke steering wheel are in great shape and retain a nice stock appearance. The instrument cluster is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, fuel gauge, and clock, along with indicator lights for the emergency brake, generator, oil pressure, and engine temperature. The dash is finished with an AM/FM push button radio in the center and a locking glove box on the passenger side. Whether you're buying your first classic muscle car or you're adding to your existing collection, this 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible would make a wonderful choice.
