This engine originally powered Model J chassis 2175, a short-wheelbase car delivered to David G. Joyce on November 26,1929. At that time, it carried a Murphy convertible coupe body with a non-disappearing top. Sometime in the 1960’s. the engine was removed, probably for repair, and never reunited with the rest of the car. It has recently been completely reconditioned and blueprinted by Bill Mote of B&J Restorations in Seattle.

The block was bored and fitted with newly forged pistons, rings and wrist pins. The connecting rods are a set from the Marshall Merke’s Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg parts operation. The crank shaft was polished, main bearings were babbited and align-bored to fit the crankshaft and the connecting rods had new inserts. The crankshaft, rods, pistons, flywheel, and clutch have been balanced.

The cylinder head has new valves and valve guides; hardened seats have been fitted for the exhaust valves. The cams were ground, and the lifters re-faced. The timing chains are used parts but are in almost new condition. The timing chain tensioners were rebuilt by Brian Joseph. The clutch unit has also been rebuilt.
The engine is believed to be complete and has been cosmetically detailed to Pebble Beach standards. With ancillaries fitted, it will be ready for any appropriate use.
