HISTORICS SUCCESS IN THE SUN

Ascot Racecourse on 27th May returned a £3 million sale and a robust 75% sale rate.

Fine weather accompanied significant buyer interest at Historics' latest major sale at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 27th May. Following the 159 enormously varied entries that passed across the auction block that day, Historics registered another impressive result at £3m gross with an impressive 75% rate of sale.

Its customary three viewing days preceding the auction attracted over 500 visitors whilst a buoyant auction hall on sale day was joined by 600 online bidder registrations internationally. Despite significant online bidding interest, some 70% of sold entries passed to bidders in-hall and on the phone, endorsing Historics' enthusiasm and commitment to hosting open-to-public sales.

One of the undoubted entry highlights was a fine 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT which, following a spirited in-hall bidding tussle, settled on an over-estimate £254,240. In fact, the Ferrari led the charge on a great day for iconic 1970s Italian marques with robust sales also of a 1976 Lamborghini Urraco P300 (£112,000), a 1972 Maserati Indy (£43,000) and - the most colourful of the selection - a 1972 De Tomaso Pantera presented in Le Mans 24 Hour race livery in homage to the cars entered that year.

A Historics sale is always known for its widely varying and substantial entry of Mercedes-Benz classics and it was no different here....a total of 22 examples were presented for sale and by the close of the auction, 16 had passed to new owners, including five G-Class models, a 1992 G-Wagon GES 300 soaring to nearly twice its estimate. What's more, a charming UK-supplied, right-hand drive 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL that had benefitted from a cosmetic restoration captured significant interest before selling for £108,640.

Rolls-Royce enthusiasts were treated to nine fine examples, largely from the '70s and '80s. Of the seven sales, arguably the most notable was a 1980 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II that had travelled just 5,600 miles since new and rewarded its vendor with a sale at £30,000. Meanwhile, a magnificent 2012 Bentley Continental GTC showed its sublime class, cruising to £60,000, nearly 50% higher than its mid-estimate.

British sporting classics were in abundance from the likes of MG and Triumph and a welcome addition was the ex-works 1961 Lotus Elite (Type 14) Series 2 that showed its sporting provenance, selling above estimate for £54,000.

Porsche too was well represented by a total of 13 examples, of which nine passed to new owners, including a 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2, selling well above estimate at £53,760.

A truly exceptional restoration was the story behind an absolutely pristine 1961 Bedford J0, the pick-up proving much sought after on the day, passing to a new enthusiast owner for a breezy £47,600. Staying with light commercials, a private collection of well-presented and highly affordable British 50's and 60's classics all sold strongly from no reserve, including a 1960 Ford Thames Van at £13,584, 1951 Ford Thames 400E pick-up at £16,520, and a 1956 Ford Thames Van at £14,000.

Finally, no Historics sale is complete without an inspiring selection of American classics and gracing the auction hall at Ascot were the two mightiest entries of the day in the shape of a duo of magnificent 1964 and 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertibles, both selling for over £15,000, the invigorating US entry also including an imposing 1935 Auburn Phaeton 653 Cabriolet.
