Farnborough International plays host on Saturday 11th May
Historics celebrates a landmark event on Saturday 11th May as, for the first time, they open the doors to a major auction at the super-impressive Farnborough International Exhibition Centre - known also as the home of the British Motor Show.
The appropriately named ‘Flight of Elegance’ sale of over 170 fine classics caters for the wide market spectrum, including even a classic aeroplane – a first for Historics.
With summer coming, the many sporting classics amongst the hugely varied entry are sure to be high on the interest agenda. Classic Jaguars always make a strong showing and to many there’s nothing better than an XK120, first introduced in 1948. A 1953 XK120 Drophead Coupé, benefitting from extensive restoration, waves the Jaguar flag sportingly, alongside a superb 1952 XK120 SE Roadster and equally enticing 1950 Roadster. See also the rare 1967 Jaguar MK.II by New Zealand bespoke Jaguar specialist, Beacham. Meanwhile, a unique 1972 Lotus Elan `DHC ‘Sprint 5’ is representative of another British sporting classic with a tremendous following as are fine examples from the likes of Triumph and Austin Healey.
Historics is the nation’s number one seller of Mercedes-Benz classics and enthusiasts won’t be disappointed with the offering here, a 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda in the same ownership for over 45 years being just one stand-out example on sale, ably supported by a magnificent 1969 280SL Pagoda. But arguably the star of the Mercedes-Benz firmament is a ferociously-powerful 2104 Mercedes-Benz SLS ‘Final Edition’ – Enormously rare and collectible and simply exquisite in every respect.
Those with a leaning to Italian classics are sure to be attracted by a superb array of Ferraris. A sensationally-fast 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello ‘World Speed Record’, one of just 33 manufactured, is joined by a thrilling 5-litre flat-12 1974 Ferrari 512 BBI and two years it’s senior is an exceptional Ferrari Dino 246 GT that’s travelled just 20,000 miles since new.
There is also a fine selection of Stuttgart’s finest from Porsche, including a former 911/996 Turbo S ex- press car from 2004, an extremely rare 2011 Porsche 987 Spyder and a superb evocation of the 1982 Porsche 924 Turbo S2 Carrera GT.
Historics is also delighted to be offering a stupendous French classic – a 1960 Facel Vega HK500 – and one of just five right-hand drive Alpine A110 ‘Tour de Corse 75’models from 2002, both a wonderful counterpoint to a charming 1987 Citroen 2CV Special.
Japanese classics are proudly represented, amongst others, by a spicy 1973 Datsun 240Z, number 16 of just 177 examples whilst, if quintessential British luxury 4x4s are on your shopping list, a brace of Range Rovers by Holland & Holland ticks all the boxes. And if a Range Rover isn’t large enough, Historics has the answer here with an extended 1994 Range Rover Vogue SE – coachbuilt for the Sultan of Brunei and featuring a mighty 40” extension midships with two extra doors.
Meanwhile pre-war enthusiasts can’t fail to be impressed by a 1936 Lagonda Le Mans Team Car replica.
And whilst talking venerable British classics, waving the flag regally for Bentley is a sensational S1 Continental Coupé by Park Ward, one of just 45 RHD examples produced.
Finally, and fittingly for the Farnborough sale, an aeroplane joins the Historics entry for the first time… The 1970’s Oldfield Super Baby Lakes single-seater stunt biplane is surely the ideal complement to any high flyers’ classic collection!
Two full viewing days immediately preceding the sale allow plenty of opportunity to study all entries within then expansive under-cover venue conveniently located near the M3 motorway.
