Continuing our mini-review of a few classic and iconic cars, today we take a look at the Aston Martin DB5, which was released in 1963 and is a British luxury grand tourer that was made by Aston Martin but designed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, an Italian coachbuilder.
Not the first in the DB series and an evolution of its predecessor the DB4, this classic is probably best known as the car of choice for James Bond in many of his films, first appearing in Goldfinger in 1964. The Bond who drove the DB5, and many other sports cars in subsequent Bond movies, was the late great Sir Sean Connery, who sadly passed away at the end of October 2020. The original James Bond, considered by many to be the best, will sadly be missed but never forgotten.
The car was produced over two years and just over 1,000 were manufactured. However, earlier this year (2020), production was resumed and approximately 25 have been manufactured to date.
This two-door classic has an all-aluminium front-engine and rear-wheel-drive, with a 4-litre engine and 5-speed transmission, capable of a top speed of 145 mph.
Standard features on the DB5 include reclining seats, wool pile carpets, electric windows, twin-fuel tanks, chrome wire wheels, and with full-leather trim inside – the James Bond versions had several "special upgrades" and special effects of their own to keep moviegoers happy and Bond out of trouble!
With an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 8 seconds, this high-performance GT was dubbed the "most famous car in the world" in the mid-60s due to its association with the Bond franchise and its classy and stylish appearance. Over the years, toys, detailed models, limited edition kits, and VDO games have all added to the popularity of this iconic vehicle, along with appearances in many other movies too.
In terms of value, an original 1964 DB5 that was used purely for promoting the Bond movie Thunderball in 1965, and complete with all of the gadgets that were added for the previous film, sold at an auction in 2019 for an astonishing 6.4 million USD.
Current valuations of the DB5 vary greatly depending on condition but if you are looking for one then we have a couple of dealers that might be able to help.
